Make Disciples Who Make Disciples

(The following is the October 4 devotional from my Next Step Devotions book. Before reading it, I suggest you read 2 Timothy 2 and pay close attention to verses 1-2.)

Do you ever make something more complicated than necessary? Some people pour over options endlessly when making decisions or planning a course of action. They allow analysis paralysis to keep them from making progress toward the goal.

We can also overthink and unnecessarily complicate our task as ambassadors for Christ, creating obstacles that unnecessarily hinder our progress in fulfilling the Great Commission. Christ commanded the apostles to make disciples of all nations (Matt. 28:19). Each Christian can play a part in that process as we encourage others regarding faith and Christian growth. How that plays out in any believer’s life is as unique and creative as our Creator God and how he equips us to serve him.

Paul gave Timothy a simple way to make disciples: “What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, commit to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (v. 2). Teach others who can teach others. Make disciples who make disciples. Pass on the truth of God’s Word to others who willingly receive it and are eager to share it. That should be a lot easier than we sometimes make it.

If Christ has saved you, you have a story to tell. Your testimony can include what your life was like before knowing Christ, how you came to know him, and the difference he makes in your life now. Your story can be a powerful element in making disciples. As we tell our story, we should point others to God’s story of salvation for all who turn to Christ in repentance and faith.

Don’t overcomplicate things. Make disciples who make disciples.

How have you recently encouraged people to know and follow Jesus? What passions, experiences, talents, and understanding has God given you that you can use to strengthen others’ faith in Christ?
