(The following is the October 22 devotional from my Next Step Devotions book. Before reading it, I suggest you read Hebrews 6 and pay close attention to verses 9-20.)
When we ponder the example others set, we can likely think of positive and negative examples. Many are blessed to witness healthy models of character and faith in their family, church, work environments, community, etc. Sadly, we also observe those whose actions damage themselves and others. Which do we imitate?
The book of Hebrews reminds us about faithful model believers who have gone before us and the value their example provides: “Now we desire each of you to demonstrate the same diligence for the full assurance of your hope until the end, so that you won’t become lazy but will be imitators of those who inherit the promises through faith and perseverance” (vv. 11-12).
Think of the hardest-working people you know. Consider the work ethic that drives them to get up every day and work hard at whatever they pursue. It’s impossible to imagine them being lazy, taking it easy when there is still much to be done. Instead, they demonstrate the perseverance needed to do the job. There may be times when they are exhausted and weary, but the pattern of their lives is to do whatever they can daily.
How does such a work ethic relate to our Christian journey? We don’t earn salvation through our labor, but that doesn’t mean we can take life easy while awaiting our eternal reward. Such an attitude ignores the urgent work needed for God’s kingdom and the exemplary perseverance of previous believers who gave their all for Christ. Instead, we are to “be imitators of those who inherit the promises through faith and perseverance.” Their faith and how they endured to the end are worthy models for us to imitate.
Next Step:
How eager are you to work daily for the cause of Christ? What Christian examples have you witnessed that inspire you to persevere in the faith? Will others remember you someday as such a model?
