Building a Wall of Faith

(The following is the December 19 devotional from my Next Step Devotions book. Before reading it, I suggest you read Revelation 14 and pay close attention to verses 6-7.)

The beast from the sea in Revelation 13 was “given authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation” (13:7). In chapter 14, John describes “another angel flying overhead, with the eternal gospel to announce to the inhabitants of the earth – to every nation, tribe, language, and people” (v.6). There is no place on Earth marred by Satan and sin that God can’t reach, for he is the Creator.

The angel cried out to every people group, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship the one who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water” (v. 7). In a world where failure to do Satan’s bidding can bring persecution and even death, God’s angel cries, “Fear God.” We must not fear Satan or those who serve him. Ultimate fear – awe, reverence, and allegiance – is due only to God.

We need not wait until Revelation’s catastrophic events unfold to show such faithfulness. We can prepare now for more substantial future challenges by being faithful in lesser moments today. We grow by determining not to succumb to temptations from others to compromise our convictions for momentary pleasure. We can guard against the influence of godless media and entertainment by refusing to allow such perversion and blasphemy into our homes. We can take advantage of teachable moments whenever they arise to affirm scriptural truth and the value of remaining true to it.

The largest stone walls are built one stone at a time. Each small daily decision to remain faithful to Christ and his Word is another solid stone forming an impenetrable wall of faith that will guard us against greater evil in days to come.

Next Step:
Reflect on recent situations where you had the opportunity to sin but chose faithfulness to Christ instead. Praise God for his strength and pray for more such occasions when tempted.
