Power Beyond Words

(The following is the July 12 devotional from my Next Step Devotions book. Before reading it, I suggest you read 1 Corinthians 4 and pay close attention to verses 14-21.)

Paul occasionally scolded fellow believers when he thought it necessary as a means of correction. Writing to the Corinthians was one such occasion. The church suffered from internal issues, from immorality by some members to would-be leaders teaching and acting contrary to the apostle’s teaching and example.

“The Lord disciplines the one he loves, just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights” (Prov. 3:12). Similarly, Paul assures his readers, “I’m not writing this to shame you, but to warn you as my dear children” (v. 14). He adds, “Now some are arrogant, as though I were not coming to you. But I will come to you, if the Lord wills, and I will find out not the talk, but the power of those who are arrogant. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. What do you want? Should I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?” (vv. 18-21).

Paul emphasized a great truth when he said that being a mature, godly servant of Christ is not just a matter of talk. What we say to others regarding our faith is a significant part of our witness for Christ. Talk matters, but nearly everyone can talk. People who do not know Christ and do not have the indwelling Holy Spirit can deliver spiritual-sounding words using Christian language they have learned. However, words alone are not proof of repentance, faith, and the Spirit’s presence and power in someone. The Holy Spirit indwelling believers brings a power absent from unbelievers.

What people say about Christ and the Word of God can be a vital clue regarding their faith. It should be present in the life of all believers. Ultimately, the fruit one bears and whether one perseveres in the faith confirms or denies faith’s genuineness.

Next Step:
How is the power of God evident in your life and service for Christ? How is that different from mere talk about faith?
