(The following is the August 16 devotional from my Next Step Devotions book. Before reading it, I suggest you read 2 Corinthians 13 and pay close attention to verses 11-13.)
Paul spent much time with the Corinthian church in person and via correspondence. As a high-maintenance congregation with many troubles and strained interactions with Paul, the relationship between him and church members experienced highs and lows.
Paul’s final words in 2 Corinthians summarize his hope for them: “Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice. Become mature, be encouraged, be of the same mind, be at peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints send you greetings. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all” (vv. 11-13).
Let’s consider the components of this healthy church snapshot:
- “Rejoice.” Christians, above all people, have reasons to rejoice.
- “Become mature.” There is always room for growth in Christ.
- “Be encouraged.” Encourage one another and be encouraged by others and by God’s promises yet to be fulfilled.
- “Be of the same mind.” We are on the same team. Strive for unity.
- “Be at peace.” Peace with God and peace from God should characterize us individually and collectively.
- “Greet one another with a holy kiss.” Genuinely welcome and enjoy each other’s presence (even if the kissing part isn’t taken literally in all cultures).
He ends by wishing upon the church grace, love, and fellowship from the three persons of the Trinity.
How would Christian churches worldwide transform if we lived according to Paul’s hope for the Corinthians? How much greater would our witness and effectiveness be in a lost world?
Next Step:
How does your church measure up to Paul’s goals for the Corinthians? How can God use you to overcome any shortcomings in your church?
