(The following is the August 22 devotional from my Next Step Devotions book. Before reading it, I suggest you read Galatians 5 and pay close attention to verses 16-23.)
Few Bible lists contrast with each other as clearly as those in Galatians 5, comparing works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit. We should carefully consider both, noting where we see our flesh at work against us and thanking God for the fruit his Spirit bears in us.
“Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I am warning you about these things – as I warned you before – that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God” (vv. 19-21). This isn’t a comprehensive list of all sins of the flesh but representative of behaviors that show an unregenerate heart in eternal danger.
The indwelling Holy Spirit shapes the Christian’s life: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things” (vv. 22-23). Christians want to please God, and the indwelling Holy Spirit empowers us to do so, providing fruit as evidence of his presence. It would be nice if God flipped a switch when people came to faith, replacing all sinful desires with Spirit-led, fruitful lives, but he doesn’t do that. Instead, we embark on a journey of growing in holiness, cooperating with God to conquer sin through his strength.
It’s good to evaluate our Christian walk regularly. Reviewing these lists and reflecting on our behavior helps us recognize where we fall short and where God is transforming us into his likeness.
Next Step:
Which works of the flesh above are a struggle for you? Which fruit of the Spirit do others see in you and compliment you concerning? Pray to overcome sinful desires and to be more like Christ.
